Working Class History T-Shirt of the Month for November 2022 from dna merch, made of 100% organic cotton by a worker-owned co-operative, and supporting grassroots labour unions in South Asia. It celebrates the Kiel mutiny of November 1918 in Germany, when sailors and workers jointly rebelled against World War I and the Kaiser, and helped put an end to the war. Celebrating their action, the ship in the design is named ‘Mutiny’. And the heart sprayed across it symbolises the love and respect still felt by those who came after them. A little more subtly, the design is also a take on Gustav Noske’s negative depiction of Kiel as “the heart of the mutiny”; it highlights and praises the beauty of the sailors’ action instead of condemning it. Noske was a leading figure of the Social Democratic Party of Germany sent from Berlin to Kiel to reinstall order and end the mutiny. In his diary he wrote: “I am in the heart of the mutiny that I condemn and want to end.”

This shirt has been designed by Henry Nonkonform from German DYI label Steeltown Records. Please note that the white and red shirts do slightly differ as the white ones come with a heart and the red ones don’t.
